Overview

Phoniƒied Mail[Y] is a mobile phone application that communicates with the Yahoo Mail™ server, so that you can access your mail from your cell phone. It can be purchased directly from Phoniƒied or from our partners like Handango, for a one time license fee of $9.95.

Mail[Y] is targeted at on-the-go people who want to read and respond to their Yahoo Mail while on the road. The application runs on most new phones being sold today, and provides a rich, easy to use client as an alternative to the mobile browser access that Yahoo supports. Unlike other solutions, Mail[Y] connects directly from your phone to the mail server, so there is no need to configure a 3rd party server with your account information.

While some phones have email clients built in, the majority of them do not work with Yahoo Mail™ unless you have a paid account that supports POP.

What you need

You need a user account at Yahoo™ and a wireless data plan. These are available from most wireless carriers, check with your carrier for details. Because email traffic can use a lot of bandwidth, we recommend an unlimited data plan, which many carriers support. If your carrier does not support unlimited data, then we suggest the highest volume plan available.

You will also need a recent model phone. You can check on our supported phones page to see if your phone is supported. Or, you can download and try the application as the best way to determine if Mail[Y] will work for you.

How to get it

To get Mail[Y], you first will need to register. After registering and confirming your email address, you can try or buy the Mail[Y] application. Because there are variations between the different phones and wireless plans, we strongly suggest you try the application first. If it works, you can then purchase a license, and upgrade your trial application.

For the user

Mail[Y] is a solution you can download and run yourself. It runs on many of today's standard phones, for most wireless carriers' networks. Best of all, it is very affordable, with a single low purchase price and no ongoing email subscription fees, other than the cost of your wireless carrier's data plan.

For the Carrier

For the carrier, Mail[Y] provides a compelling reason for subscribers to sign up for a data plan. Mail[Y] can be offered to those users who want a richer, easier experience for accessing their email from their mobile phone. Mail[Y] is a low-cost application with no recurring subscription fees, so carriers can capture new data users without also incurring long-term revenue sharing with an email service provider. Furthermore, while Mail[Y] runs well on 2.5G networks, the performance and capabilities are enhanced on a 3G network, providing an incentive for customers to upgrade to 3G service.

Note for Verizon customers

Today, Mail[Y] does not run on most Verizon phones. If you have a Treo or Windows Mobile Smartphone, you can download a separate Java engine that will allow you to run Mail[Y].

Note for T-Mobile USA customers

Certain T-Mobile data plans do not allow access to external applications (like Mail[Y]) or servers (like your corporate email server). To check if Mail[Y] works for your plan, you can attempt to download the trial application and access your server.
